Since the early 1980s, Philippe Cazal has been developing a body of work that draws on the fields of economy, marketing and advertising.

Factice is a box set designed — in the style of a specimen — like a kind of replica containing a collection of virgin communication devices: a blank video cassette, a blank CD, a blank audio cassette, a blank Ektachrome film, a blank floppy disc.

Produced in 1995, the work now appears as a time capsule of formats that were recent from a technological perspective but have since disappeared or become obsolete; a form of retrofuturism, in short.

By presenting these materials as containers rather than for their content, the work echoes Marshall McLuhan's maxim, published in 1964 in his book Understanding Media, in which he declares: ‘The medium is the message'.
