Marcel Duchamp's work Fountain is best known for its photographic reproduction by Alfred Stieglitz, which appeared in an article entitled ‘Buddha of the Bathroom' in the American magazine The Blind Man (No. 2, May 1917). Taken at face value, Stieglitz's image abstracts the form and therefore the initial function of the overturned object itself. With Object for Bathroom, Saâdane Afif reverses the analogy proposed a few years earlier by asking the buyer to place the porcelain object—facing upwards—in place of a urinal. The mirrored signature of R. Mutt painted on the left drapery of the garment affirms this process of reversal.
