Saâdane Afif, Christian Marclay - Art Genève - Art fairmfc-michèle didier | Paris - Brussels -
ART GENÈVE 2019
January 31 - February 3, 2019
Geneva, Switzerland
Ephemera by Christian Marclay is the result of a long-term accumulation of eclectic and decorative musical notations, gleaned from here and there in various advertisements, illustrations, menus, candy wrappings, etc. These ephemera have been assembled, photographed and reproduced in a series of 28 folios. From this ensemble, Christian Marclay has created a musical score named Ephemera, intended to be played.
Saâdane Afif's The Fountain Archives is also presented. In 2008, the artist decided to make Fountain the subject of a very special collection ? a collection of all the publications in which the famous Marcel Duchamp's ready-made has been reproduced. The Fountain Archives consists of a multitude of torn pages on which appears the reproduction of Fountain, each framed individually. The complete series becomes a new artwork on its own, of a contemporary view on how art history and myths of art are created.
Afif?s practice is rooted in music: scores, instruments, speakers, microphones, concerts and posters are part of his vocabulary or media. Wall texts from Paroles complete the ensemble, putting into perspective the sound and oral dimensions of Saâdane Afif's work.
Works by Marclay and Afif have in common that they are not confined to a single object or a single form, leaving possibilities for orality and musicality, which they can evoke or be intended for.
