Liam Gillick was born in 1964 in Aylesbury in UK. He lives and works in New York.
His practice is characterised by the post-conceptual vocabulary of his sculptures and installations, as well as by the quality of his work exploring language. In addition to his visual art, Liam Gillick has engaged in theoretical writing and critical reflection on curatorial practices.
Liam Gillick employs a variety of forms to spotlight the new systems of ideological control that emerged in the early 1990s. He has developed a number of key narratives that often serve as the driving force behind a body of work. Gillick's work highlights the dysfunctional aspects of a modernist legacy in the fields of abstraction and architecture when it is embedded within a globalised neoliberal consensus. His work extends to a structural rethinking of the exhibition as a form.
He has also made several short films that explore the construction of creative identity in light of the constant flux of the contemporary artist as a cultural figure.
