Mel Bochner

Mel Bochner was born in 1940 in Pittsburgh, USA. He lives and works in New York City.
He studied painting and philosophy at the Carnegie Institute of Technology ; he then became part of a new generation of artists who were looking at ways of breaking with Abstract Expressionism and traditional compositional devices. His pioneering introduction of the use of language, mathematics and geometrics systems in the visual, as well as his early use of the book to create and display artworks makes him one of the leading figures in the development of Conceptual art. Bochner has consistently probed the conventions of both painting and language, the way we construct and understand them, and the way they relate to one another.
