Joseph Grigely

Joseph Grigely was born in 1956 in the Massachusetts. He lives and works in Chicago. Having become deaf from a childhood accident, Joseph Grigely made this handicap the main generator of his artistic production. Since the 1990s his works have featured written conversations used for daily communication with his entourage. A conversation is thus rendered visible, giving visual form to oral discourse. The artist places the issue of communication and differences between speech and writing, reading and listening at the centre of his practice and integrates into his practice the concept of narrative in its most ordinary dimension : the stories that are part of our daily life. These polyphonic fragments were reproduced in 2006 in the book Blueberry Surprise, published by éditions mfc-michèle didier. Detached from their context, these pieces of casual conversations become mysterious and poetic messages in space and time, triggering mental images.
